The overall mission of the FIANS certification program is to enhance human and organizational performance as related to the use and application of codes and standards. It is the particular mission of this Fire Inspector Program to promote professionalism within the fire inspector field-of-practice through a widely accepted, recognized, appreciated, and practical course of studies.
FIANS has worked in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal in the development of this certification program.

Introduction to Fire Inspections Program Application
*Please remember that the Introduction to Fire Inspections program is a requirement for the Level 1 certification program and does not constitute the program in its entirety.
Changes to the Certification
The fall of 2024 saw some changes to the Certification (Level 1 & Level 2) program. So for members enrolled prior up to / and including December 31, 2024 you will follow the PRE- 2025 Track outlined below on the left. All others follow the 2025 Track below on the right.

Certification Renewal Program
Effective January 1, 2025 – the FIANS Fire Inspector Professional Education Program will include a required certification renewal component (continuing education) as follows:
- Those holding a Level 1 or Level 2 Fire Inspector certificate as at December 31, 2024 are exempt from this requirement.
- Renewal will be required every 3 years from date of initial certification.
Renewal Requirements:
- A minimum of 12 points are to be accumulated during each 3 year period.
- One must be a member in good standing for each year when holding a fire inspector certification.
Renewal Process
- Points are available for collection during the FIANS Spring and Fall conferences held each year.
- 3 points are available for collection at each of the conferences.
- 1 point is acquired for each full-day of attendance and participation in the certification renewal program. 1 point is acquired for each full-day attendance at the conference general Monday sessions.
- Individuals are responsible to fully complete the prescribed form and submit it to FIANS at least 30 days prior to the end of each 3 year period.
- Those facilitating during FIANS conferences are eligible to acquire certification renewal points at the rate of 1 point for each day of facilitation.
